Zane J. McFadden, DDS, of Camillus, died Monday, at the age of 75, after being struck by a car while crossing the street in downtown Syracuse. On August 13, 1946, he was born in Wellsville, NY, to Jay (John) McFadden and Marie Catherine Snyder. Zane graduated from Wellsville H.S. in 1964 and the University of Buffalo with a degree in Chemistry and Psychology in 1969. In 1966, he met Darlene M. Cavano at the University of Buffalo, and they married three years later, January 18, 1969. Zane later received his DDS degree from the University of Buffalo in 1973. He worked as a US Army dentist at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn, and in 1975 moved to Upstate NY where he practiced dentistry on the west side of Syracuse for the past 46 years. Zane was many things to those who knew him.
He was a dedicated dental professional, an extraordinary father and grandfather, and an avid fisherman. His family remembers his love for the outdoors, fishing, hunting, fish dinners, and mincemeat pies. Zane enjoyed fishing on Otisco Lake, Skaneateles Lake, the Pacific Northwest in British Columbia, and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He loved history, science, cars, boats, and a good story or joke. He was highly respected by his friends, colleagues, and patients. He will be greatly missed.
Zane is survived by his wife of 52 years, the former Darlene Cavano; their two children: Tara Murray of Delmar, NY and Brook McFadden of Albuquerque, NM.
He has four grandchildren: Jared and Brian Murray; and Aidan and Lily Arner. He will be deeply missed by his closest friend, Christine Donegan, and her children, Peter and Marybeth Donegan. His sisters, Lynda Kemp and Dolly Kelly, are predeceased, and he is survived by many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
