William S. Volcko, 93, of Sandy Creek, formerly of Marcellus, passed away Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at VA Medical Center. A lifetime resident of the Syracuse area, he moved to Sandy Creek in the early 1980s. An Army veteran, William proudly served in the 240th Combat Engineer Battalion in the South Pacific Theatre during WWII. He was employed for over 30 years with the Armor Star Meat Company and also worked as a maintenance and groundskeeper for the Tuscarora Golf Course. William was a former communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church, past president of the Sandy Pond Sportsman Association and enjoyed restoring old military vehicles. He loved his pets and spending time on his front porch overlooking the creek.
William was predeceased by his sister, Yolanda Kilcoyne; brothers, John, Joseph, Andrew, Frank and Paul; and grandson, Nathaniel Volcko.
Surviving are his daughters, Denise (Sigmond) Pieklik of Jordan and Kathryn (Kevin) Welch of Camillus; sons, William (Lois) of Skaneateles, Robert of Marcellus and James (Malinda) of Edisto Island, SC; sisters, Theresa Volcko of East Syracuse and Loretta Hartung of Costa Mesa, CA; brother, Edward (Arlene) of Syracuse; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and companion and caregiver, Mary.
The family extends a special thank you to his nephew, Richard, for his loving care and compassion given to William.
Relatives and friends may call Friday, December 16 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus.
Services will be Saturday, December 17 at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home. William will be laid to rest in Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery with full military honors.
