William "Bill" J. Upwood Jr., 83, of Camillus, passed away Thursday at Bishop Rehabilitation & Nursing Center. Born and raised in Highland Park, MI, he moved to the Syracuse area in 1966. Bill graduated from De La Salle Collegiate High School and received his bachelor's degree from the University of Detroit. He retired after working many years at WCNY public television station as a production manager, director, and television engineer.
He was self-employed as owner of Upwood Video Communications and worked part-time in his retirement at Syracuse University Maxwell School with teleconferencing. He was a mentor and teacher, always ready to share his knowledge and love of television.
Bill was a communicant of St. Charles~St. Ann's Parish. He loved photography, travel and wintering in Orange Beach, AL. Bill was also an avid reader, music lover, and took many long walks around his neighborhood, where many friends spotted him out and about. But most of all, he loved spending time with family, especially his grandchildren.
He glowed with pride at every accomplishment big or small, of his children and grandchildren. Bill was never without his sense of humor and many words of wisdom, including “there are no future facts”, and “never assume”.
Bill was predeceased by his parents, William and Clara Upwood and sister, Marie Riegel.
Surviving are his devoted wife of 54 years, the former Catherine Carrico and children, William (Veronica) Upwood of Glen Gardner, NJ, Mary Upwood of Camillus, Anne (David) Caron of Bedford, MA and James (Tracy) Upwood of Camillus; brothers, Frank (Jackie) Upwood of Central Square and John (Sharon) Upwood of Grand Island, FL; grandchildren, Joshua, Matthew, Caroline, Christopher, Laura, Elizabeth, Sarah, Andrew and Peter; and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the amazing staff at Bishop Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, especially the D North Dementia Unit, who cared for Bill as their own. You know who you are and we thank you for your kindness and love.
Relatives and friends may call Tuesday, August 18 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus. We will be following the NYS guidelines regarding capacity and social distancing. Face coverings are required.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday August 21, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Charles~St. Ann's Parish, 501 South Orchard Rd., Syracuse. Burial will be private in Greenlawn Cemetery, Warners.
