William J. McCarthy, 97, of Camillus, went home to his eternal reward to be reunited with Eleanor, the love of his life, on Monday. Born and raised in Syracuse, Bill graduated from CBA in 1946 and was a proud member of the first graduating class of Le Moyne College in 1951. He honorably served his country as a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Bill dedicated over 40 years to the newspaper business, working at the Ithaca Journal, Catholic Sun, and Courier Express in Buffalo before finishing his career with the Syracuse newspapers. Even after his retirement in 1995, he continued his love for journalism by proofreading the paper daily.
A devout communicant of Holy Family Church, Bill found joy and strength in his deep faith. He was an avid golfer, crossword puzzle enthusiast (in pen), and cherished his Friday night movies, Sunday morning donuts, and ice cream parties with his grandchildren. Bill and his wife shared a passion for travel, including several cross-country trips, creating a lifetime of memories along the way. His kindness, sharp wit, and unwavering love for family will be deeply missed.
Bill was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor; and brother, Bob.
Surviving are his sons, William McCarthy and Patrick (Michelle) McCarthy; daughters, Margaret (Paul) Morrell, Katie (Joe) Assaf, and Nora (Bud) O'Malley; grandchildren, Emily (David) Downing, Erin (Ken) Lucas, Sarah Morrell, Julie, Michael, Peter, and Billy Assaf, Buddy, Danny, and George O'Malley, and Alyssa and Sean McCarthy; great-grandchildren, Alex Downing and Eleanor Lucas; and several nieces and nephews.
To celebrate Bill’s life, relatives and friends are invited to gather on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, March 20, 2025, at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church, 127 Chapel Dr., Syracuse.
