Walter S. Vaga, 83, of Camillus, passed away Thursday, September 10, 2009 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Born in Syracuse on Friday, April 2, 1926, he was the son of Stephen and Anna Vaga. He lived in Camillus for more than 50 years. An Army veteran, Walter was proud to have served his country during World War II. He was former owner of Vaga Meats and several gas stations. A communicant of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, he was also a member of the Holy Name Society. He was a former volunteer for St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church and School where he was the only gym teacher. Walter enjoyed bowling, golf, boxing, and working in his yard. An avid hunter, fisherman and boater, he loved the outdoors. He was especially fond of music and dancing. Walter was predeceased by his wife, Mary Husak Vaga on May 4, 2005; son, Peter; and granddaughters, Lisa and Daisy. Surviving are his daughters and sons-in-law, Kim and Bill MacClurg of Cary, North Carolina, Vicki and Gil Schnorr of Camillus and Krista and Greg Kenna of Camillus; sons and daughters-in-law, Walter and Theresa Vaga of Syracuse, Steve and Colleen Vaga of Camillus and Michael Vaga of Baldwinsville; and 11 grandchildren with one on the way. Services will be at 9:15 a.m. Monday, September 14, 2009 at Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus and at 10 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Church where a Divine Liturgy for the Deceased will be celebrated. Relatives and friends may call Sunday, September 13, 2009 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home. Panakhyda services will be at 3:30 p.m. Walter will be laid to rest in Greenlawn Cemetery, Warners.
