Walter Curtis Carpenter

Walter Curtis Carpenter, 93, of Marcellus, died Monday, November 24, 2008 at Community-General Hospital. Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania on Monday, December 28, 1914, he was the son of Adam Curtis Carpenter and Janette Burlack Carpenter. The family moved to Kenmore, New York where Walter later graduated from Kenmore High School. He attended Bryant and Stratton Business School. He was employed by Wilson Sporting Goods in Buffalo and had a dance orchestra as a sideline for several years. In June 1941, Walter married Doris Anderson. He was called into service on November 12, 1942, joined the navy, and spent some time at Sampson Naval Base in Geneva before being sent overseas to Legete. He was discharged from the navy in December 1945. He worked for National Gypsum Co. in Buffalo, was later transferred to Syracuse, and the family located in Marcellus. Later he became a salesman for Syracuse Lumber until his retirement in 1979. Walter was a member of the Ralph Share American Legion Post and the Marcellus Optimist Club, serving as president and governor of the New York State Optimists. His favorite pastime was golf. He was a member of the Tuscarora Golf Club for several years. He served as president and was the first recipient to receive the Man of the Year Award. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, the former Doris Anderson; daughters, Barbara Carpenter of Syracuse and Janet Ferris of Marcellus; grandchildren, Wendy Jenkins, Jeffrey Carpenter, Kelli Ferris and Kevin Ferris; and four great-grandchildren. Services will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, November 26, 2008 at Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus with Rev. Edgar L. Thornburg of the First Presbyterian Church of Marcellus presiding. Friends may call preceding the service from 3 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the spring in Highland Cemetery, Marcellus. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to one's favorite charity.
