Vernon “Bud” Sherwood, 83, of Oswego, passed away Sunday, June 7, 2009 after a courageous battle with leukemia. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. The only child of Frank and Mary Sherwood, Bud was born in Onondaga Hill on Wednesday, August 26, 1925. He lived in the Syracuse area until his retirement in 1986. Bud spent the next 20 years in North Fort Myers, Florida. He enjoyed summers camping in the Adirondacks and spent many hours volunteering with the restoration of Sagamore. After graduation from Split Rock, he served in the Navy during World War II. He earned a pilot’s license after military duty. Bud was employed by Pittsburg Plate Glass Co. and R.M. Cromwell, Inc. before a career as an agent for Prudential Insurance Co. spanning nearly 30 years. He was a former member of Fairmount Community Church. He was an outdoor sportsman as well as an avid Yankees and SU sports fan. He also enjoyed the company of his many friends. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, the former Norma Stanton; daughter and son-in-law, Wendy and John Heretyk of Oswego; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Christine Sherwood of North Syracuse and grandchildren, Nicholas and Shelby Sherwood. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, June 12, 2009 at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus. Relatives and friends may call preceding the service from noon to 1 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Gary E. Ferner officiating. Burial will be in the Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
