Thomas D. Mahany, 84, of Camillus, died Friday, September 5, 2008 at home. Born in Lackawanna on Tuesday, February 12, 1924, he was the son of Thomas Daniel Mahany and Margaret Johanna Cavanaugh Mahany. He spent his early years in South Buffalo and Tonawanda before moving to Camillus in 1969. A graduate of Canisius High School, Tom was also a 1947 graduate of Canisius College with a B.S. in Physics. He was an electronic engineer for General Electric Co. Heavy Military Electronics Systems Division in Syracuse for 17 years, retiring in 1986. He was also formerly employed by Cornell Aeronautical Lab in Buffalo. A Navy veteran of World War II, he was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 721. Tom was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church and member of the GE Retirees Luncheon Group. He was a former scout master of Troop 206 at St. Amelia's Church in Tonawanda. A neighborhood handyman, he also enjoyed gardening, bowling, fishing, golfing and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, the former Helen Hider; daughters and sons-in-law, Dr. Mary and John Mahany Watson of Chesapeake, Virginia and Kathleen and Daniel Gilheney of Camillus; sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Thomas and Connie Mahany of Defiance, Ohio and Daniel and Marie Mahany of Penfield; sister, Margaret Mahany of Hamburg; brothers and sister-in-law, Maurice and Lois Mahany of Hamburg and Robert Mahany of West Seneca; 11 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Services will be at noon on Monday, September 8, 2008 at St. Joseph's Church, Camillus where a funeral Mass will be celebrated. Friends may call Sunday, September 7, 2007 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus. Burial will be in the Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Syracuse. Contributions may be made to Western Area Volunteer Emergency Services, 202 Bennett Rd., Camillus, NY 13031 or to Hospice of Central New York, 990 Seventh North St., Liverpool, NY 13088.
