Stanley W. Kalwara, 87, of Onondaga Hill, died Saturday, November 1, 2008 at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center in Syracuse. Born in New York City on Saturday, April 9, 1921, he was the son of Joseph Kalwara and Weronika Krochmiel Kalwara. He grew up in New York City and moved to the Town of Onondaga in 1956. A safety engineer for Travelers Insurance Co. for 30 years, Stanley retired in 1983. He was a communicant of The Church of St. Michael & St. Peter. He graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point. He played semipro baseball in New York City.A Navy veteran, he was an engineering officer during World War II, serving on several destroyers and convoys. He loved to sing opera and was an opera afficionado. A skilled woodworker, avid reader andworld traveler, he also enjoyed gardening. His wife, the former M. Bonita Caraglin, died January 8, 2001. Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Jean Marie and Mark Easter of Indianapolis, Indiana; sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Edith Kalwara of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Christopher and Karen Kalwara of Syracuse; grandsons, John, Joseph, James and Matthew. Services will be at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus and at 10:30 a.m. in The Church of St. Michael & St. Peter where a funeral Mass will be celebrated. Friends may call Tuesday, November 4, 2008 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Warners. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 6725 Lyons St., P.O. Box 7, East Syracuse, NY 13057.
