Sophia P. Smolnycki, 93, of Fairmount, passed away Monday, February 23, 2009 at Crouse Hospital. Born in Syracuse on Saturday, March 27, 1915, she was the daughter of Savka and Catherine Piston. She lived in Fairmount for over 50 years. Sophia was a graduate of East Syracuse High School. She was a communicant of Holy Family Church and member of the Altar & Rosary Society. She enjoyed cooking and baking and was an avid fan of the Syracuse Chiefs. Her family was her pride and joy. Sophia’s husband, Harry, died August 25, 1985. She was also predeceased by her 13 brothers and sisters. Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel and Jill Smolnycki of Chittenango and David and Dawn Smolnycki of Syracuse; granddaughters, Kristen (Dennis) Duggleby of Fayetteville, Kara (David) Ednie of Richmond, Virginia, Katherine Smolnycki of Rochester and Kimberly Smolnycki of Syracuse; and great-grandchildren, Alexander and Madelyn Duggleby of Fayetteville. Services will be at 9:15 a.m. Friday, February 27, 2009 at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus and at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church where a funeral Mass will be celebrated. Relatives and friends may call Thursday, February 26, 2009 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Sophia will be laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery, DeWitt.
