Royce H. Newell, 78, of Camillus, died Friday, February 3, 2006 at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center in Syracuse. Born in Corry, Pennsylvania on Monday, May 2, 1927, he was the son of Ralph Newell and Joseph Roberts. He lived in the Syracuse area since 1949, most of that time in Camillus. Royce was a graduate of Jamestown High School and earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Syracuse University. He served as a teacher, coach, and Director of Physical Education and Athletics for the West Genesee Central School District in Camillus, retiring in 1982 after 33 years. Following his retirement from West Genesee, he was employed as a manufacturers representative for NEVCO Scoreboard Co., retiring in 2005 after 23 years. Royce was a member of the Syracuse University basketball team from 1945-1949, the New York State Athletic Administrators Association, the Central NY Volleyball Officials Corp., Section III of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, and the Onondaga High School League, for which he served as secretary and treasurer. He was also a member of the Camillus Kiwanis, the Syracuse University Alumni, and was an auxiliary volunteer at Community Hospital. Royce was a founding member of Immanuel United Methodist Church, the Church of the Bells. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, the former Caroline Cole; son, William R. Newell and daughter-in-law Linda T. Newell of Liverpool; daughter, Julie L. Newell of Fredonia and grandchildren, Katharine M. Newell and Jeffrey R. Newell. A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday, February 7, 2006 at Immanuel United Methodist Church 303 Kasson Rd., Camillus. Friends may call Monday, February 6, 2006 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus. Contributions may be made to the Royce H.
