Rocco Fiermonte, 91, of Lawrenceville, GA, formerly of Camillus, passed away Friday, January 20, 2017 after a short illness. Rocco was a WWII veteran and served aboard the LST-689 where he was awarded two battle stars while serving in the South Pacific. He was an active member of the US LST Assoc. and was a recipient of the NY Conspicuous Service Medal.
Rocco was vice president of the Syracuse Transit Co. and Director of Maintenance for CNY Centro, Inc., where he was employed for over 40 years, retiring in 1987. His long association with the transit industry earned him national honors and accomplishments. Among them was his leading role in the development of the kneeling bus and the Syracuse School Summer Work Program. He helped design a maintenance facility that became state of the art and was cited for his Safety Employee Awards Program for maintenance efficiency for 14 consecutive years. Rocco was past president of the Eastern Bus Maintenance Manager's Assoc.
An active communicant of Holy Family Church, he served as an usher and was a member and past president of the Holy Name Society. He was the first president of the Holy Name Seniors. Rocco was a life member and past president of the Camillus Optimist Club, past commander of the Camillus American Legion Post 1540 and life member of the VFW. While in Georgia, he was a member and president of the Bogan Gold Wings Club and the Dacula Rainbow Seniors.
Rocco was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, the former Margaret Sheldon.
Surviving are his son, John Fiermonte and daughter-in-law, Cathy Boca Fiermonte of Smyrna, TN; daughter, Nancy Fiermonte McCaffrey and son-in-law, Dennis McCaffrey of Lawrenceville, GA; grandchildren Christina Fiermonte Davis of Florida, David Fiermonte of Tennessee and Elaina McCaffrey of Georgia; along with several great-grandchildren.
Relatives and friends may call Friday, Janaury 27 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, Camillus.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, January 28 at 9 a.m. in Holy Family Church. Rocco will be laid to rest in the Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
