Robert "Bob" Bruce Shields, 87, of Marcellus, passed away Tuesday at Crouse Hospital. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, he was a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University and received both a Bachelor's and Master's of Science in Electrical Engineering. Bob moved to Syracuse in 1958 where he was employed by Syracuse University Research Corp. (SRC, Inc.) until 1967, when he moved to Marcellus. In the early 1970s, he helped found the start-up Microwave Systems, Inc. He returned to SRC, Inc., until 1986, when he became the co-founder and president of Research Associates of Syracuse, Inc. Bob was a member of the Marcellus United Methodist Church, an Eagle Scout, and received the Vigil Honor with the Boy Scouts. He was active in Rotary Club for over 35 years and received the Paul Harris Fellow Award in recognition of his contributions. He enjoyed the outdoors, boating, biking, spelunking, scuba diving, snorkeling, playing bagpipes, and traveling, which led him to Nepal on a medical mission.
Bob was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Cleo.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, the former Margaret "Peg" Vetter; children, Dr. George of Greenville, SC, Douglas (Susan) of Clermont, FL, David (Patricia) and Maryjane (Mike) Harris, both of Salisbury, NC, and Donald (Jennifer) of Falls Church, VA; grandchildren, Eric, Keith, Luke, Rob, Matthew, Jack, Scott, Stephen, Bethany, Melanie, Grace, and Laine; four great-grandchildren; and brothers, David of Hilton Head, SC, and Donald (Donna) of Churchville, PA.
Relatives and friends may call Saturday, June 11 from 10 to 11 a.m. at Marcellus United Methodist Church. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. at the church.
Bob will be laid to rest at Highland Cemetery, Marcellus.
