Robert L. Roskopf, 92, of Camillus, passed away Saturday, June 15, 2019 at VA Medical Center. A lifetime resident of the Syracuse area, he was a graduate of Assumption Catholic School and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Robert was a Syracuse City firefighter for 25 years, retiring as a lieutenant. Bob was an avid numismatist and stamp collector. He also enjoyed fishing and boating, especially at his camp on 1000 Islands. Bob was an avid history buff from the Civil War forward. While visiting with Bob at his home, there would usually be a movie playing. Bob’s thinking was if it wasn’t a black and white, was it really a movie? Bob loved to cook and to be “invited” to one of his famous pizza fests was a treat.
There was always family or friends visiting Bob and his grandchildren held a special place in his heart. Bob was a “tough ol’ goat” and when you entered into his inner circle, it was amusing. He was a proud Catholic and enjoyed his daily Mass at Holy Family Church in Fairmount, (Thank you Richard and Sister Theresa for the rides.)
Thank you to the VA Hospital staff, especially the 8th Floor for their great work. What a great job you all did for one of our proud veterans.
A special thank you to the “platoon” that made Bob’s last days as comforting as possible over the last several months. Elizabeth “Biz” Clark, Mary Lou Lander, Patti Johnstone, and Audrey Diamond.
Robert was predeceased by his first wife, Mildred, in 1998; second wife, Mary Louise, in 2007; sister, Rita Rush; son-in-law, William Mosher; grandson, Sean Daley; and great-grandson, Sean Cummings.
Surviving are his children, Linda (Mike) Daley, Michael (Marsha) Roskopf, Patricia (Christopher) Johnstone, James (Gina) Roskopf, Robert (Donna) Roskopf, Beverly Mosher, Audrey (James) Diamond, and Elizabeth (Kenneth) Seel; stepchildren, Mary Louise Lander, Kelly Curtis, Patricia (Jamie) Kuepper-Artessa, Theresa (Richard) Lamarre, Thomas (Elizabeth) Clarke, Mark Clarke, James (Karen) Clarke, and Michael Clarke; sister, Barbara Muhl; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
There will be no calling hours.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, June 26 at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church. Burial will be private in Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Robert’s name to Syracuse VA Medical Center, c/o Home Care Unit, 800 Irving Ave., Syracuse, NY 13210.
