Richard A. Planer, 80, of Syracuse, passed away Monday at University Hospital due to complications from a recent automobile accident. Richard will be remembered for his years of service as Commissioner of Parks and Recreation for the City of Syracuse. He was a 1949 graduate of Marcellus High School and later returned as an educator and chairman of the social studies department. A veteran of the Korean War, Richard was a graduate of Syracuse University Maxwell School. He was a faculty member and administrator at O.C.C. and Syracuse University. He was on the board of directors with the Syracuse SkyChiefs, WCNY-TV, and many other public agencies during his career. Surviving are his niece, Kathleen A. (Ron) Owen of Baldwinsville; nephew, Charles K. (Margaret) Planer Jr. of Onondaga; a great-niece and three great-nephews and their children. At Richard's request, services will be private and there will be no calling hours. Arrangements are by the Buranich Funeral Home, Camillus.
