Rev. Robert D. Chryst, 82, beloved priest and devoted servant of Syracuse, entered eternal rest on October 26, 2024, at Elderwood at Liverpool. Born in Syracuse to Robert D. Chryst and Katherine Sullivan Chryst, he grew up in a close-knit Catholic community, attending Most Holy Rosary School before pursuing his calling to the priesthood.
Father Chryst dedicated his life to faith, education, and service. He graduated from St. Andrew's Seminary in 1962 and continued his theological studies at St. Bernard's Seminary, earning a B.A. in 1964. He was ordained as a priest on May 18, 1968, by Bishop David F. Cunningham at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Syracuse. His passion for ministry extended beyond traditional pastoral roles, leading him to further his studies, receiving a Certificate in Latin American Studies from the Larrain Institute at Catholic University of Puerto Rico in 1969, and later a Juris Doctor from Syracuse University College of Law in 1976.
Father Chryst’s pastoral assignments included serving as Associate Pastor of St. Lucy's Church from 1968 to 1983 and later as Priest in Residence at St. Anthony of Padua from 1983 to 1995. He was appointed Administrator at St. Anthony of Padua from 1995 until 2021, providing steady leadership to the parish for over two decades. He was a key figure in the Diocese of Syracuse, serving as Director of the Spanish Apostolate from 1969 to 2021, Diocesan Liaison with the Charismatic Renewal Movement from 1980 to 1990, a member of the Priests’ Senate, and the Board of Consultors. He was also a founding member of Liga de Accion Hispana of Onondaga County.
Father Chryst’s service extended into the legal field, becoming a member of the New York State and Onondaga County Bar Associations in 1977. With compassion and dedication, he worked with the Assigned Counsel Program, offering legal support to indigent Hispanic clients, a testament to his commitment to social justice and the dignity of all people.
Alongside his ministry, Father Chryst cherished music, playing the organ at Most Holy Rosary Church in his youth and serving as a substitute organist at various Syracuse churches. He was a skilled pianist and guitarist, who brought joy and comfort through music to his own parish community.
Father Cryst’s legacy of faith, compassion, and service will remain deeply embedded in the hearts of those he served and those who knew him. May he rest in the peace of Christ he so faithfully proclaimed.
Father Chryst was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Katherine; and sisters, Joan Charlson, Helen Bardenett and Carol Wallace; and close friend, Sam Oloye.
Surviving are his sister, Kaye Chryst Barrington of Camillus; many nieces and nephews; and close friends, Samuel Acevedo and Jorge Luis Mendez.
