Rev. David J. James, 71, of Syracuse, passed away Friday at Upstate University Hospital. He was a cherished figure in the Syracuse community, having dedicated his life to the service of God and his parishioners. Born and raised in the Syracuse area, he was a graduate of West Genesee High School and went on to further his education at Le Moyne College and Christ the King Seminary. Father David felt a deep connection to his community and its people.

Father David was ordained a Catholic priest on June 8, 1991, marking the beginning of his lifelong commitment to spiritual guidance and compassion. His journey led him to various parishes throughout his career, where he touched the lives of many. He was known for his unwavering faith, kindness, and dedication to his congregations. In addition to his pastoral duties, Father David selflessly served as a Chaplain for the Syracuse VA Medical Center for over 20 years, offering solace and support to veterans and their families in their times of need.

Beyond his religious vocation, Father David had a deep love for the classic movie "It's a Wonderful Life" and was a collector of its memorabilia from this beloved film. He also had a passion for baking, an insatiable curiosity for researching family ancestry, enjoyed old movies, and cherished attending plays. His interests reflected his vibrant and joyful spirit, which endeared him to those who knew him.

Most importantly, Father David cherished spending time with his family and friends, finding comfort and joy in their company.

Father David was predeceased by his parents, Lawrence and Catherine James; and brother, Larry.

Surviving are his sisters, Mary Lou (Robert) Lake of Syracuse, Nancy (David) Zanoni of Syracuse and Jo Ann (Nik) Berrong of Fort Collins, CO; brother, Robert (Linda) of Syracuse; sister-in-law, Carole James of Syracuse; and many nieces and nephews.
