Raymond John Ackerman, 94, passed away Wednesday, September 7 in Winston Salem, NC, surrounded by his family. He was born in Brooklyn on September 12, 1927. Raymond lived in NYC until moving to Syracuse in 1955. He then settled in North Carolina 25 years later.
Raymond worked for New York Telephone Co. before transferring to North Carolina to work for Western Electric and AT&T. A WWII veteran, he enlisted in the Coast Guard, protecting our coast by searching for UBoats. After the war, Raymond joined the US Merchant Marines which took him around the world. He enjoyed the high seas and adventure. He loved to travel with his wife and daughters throughout New York State, beach vacations in North Carolina, his travels across the country, and his trips to Europe with his wife. He enjoyed building and flying radio-controlled airplanes and home improvement projects. He had a great sense of humor, was kind, enjoyed meeting people, and loved his family.
Raymond was predeceased by his beloved wife of 67 years, Evelyn; parents, Bernard and Helen Ackerman; brother, Bernard; and sister, Marilynn.
Surviving are his daughters, Laura (Pete) Cost, Lisa (Dan Kelly) Siskowski, and Kristina Roe; grandchildren, Colleen, Alex, Scott, Michael, Eva, Sam, Christopher, Ashley and Tyler; 12 great-grandchildren; and his loyal dachshund, Henry.
Funeral services will be private.
