Penny L. Poorman (née Bott), 56, of Marcellus, died peacefully at Francis House on Saturday, July 6, 2019 after a valiant battle with cancer. Penny spent most of her life in Marcellus. It was her childhood home and ultimately where she decided to start her own family. She served the Marcellus Central School District for 25 years, working as a teacher’s assistant and, for much of that time, as a one-to-one aide to Sidney "Zach" Haggett, her friend and "partner in crime," who passed in January. Penny also acted as secretary and treasurer of the Marcellus Employees Union for over 15 years. For the past decade, she volunteered as a chairperson on the Marcellus After-the-Ball Party Committee, and she served as an advisor to the Junior Class since 2013. She found great joy in helping and engaging with Marcellus students.
Penny was predeceased by her parents, Ruth L. Bott and Roland K.H. Bott.
Surviving are her husband of 27 years, Donald D. Poorman; her beloved son, Daniel J. Poorman; two cherished canine companions, Dexter and Simon; nephews, David (Daria) Hodge of East Syracuse and Jason (Jessica) Hodge of Tully; three great-nephews; and a long list of close friends and coworkers who truly were her family. She’ll be remembered for her rich and infectious personality. She was driven and fiercely smart; loyal and principled; with a dry wit and a bleeding heart, and an unmatched motherly instinct that will pervade the lives of her loved ones forever.
Calling hours will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 20 at Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus.
There will be no services.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Helping Hounds Dog Rescue, 6606 Kinne Rd., DeWitt, NY 13214.
