Norman Edward Thomas, 85, of Camillus, passed away peacefully on January 8 at Crouse Hospital. A 1958 Syracuse Central High School graduate, Norm demonstrated his dedication to service through his contributions to both his country and community. He served as an Army Specialist 4 from 1958 to 1962 and earned an Associate’s Degree in Humanities from OCC in 1977 through the GI Bill. Norm began his career as a service technician at the National Cash Register from 1962 to 1982. He then found his second calling as a group therapy aide at Syracuse Developmental Center and Group Homes, dedicating 20 years to supporting others.
Norm led a life filled with purpose, creativity, and service. His passions revolved around woodworking and carpentry, where his incredible skill and craftsmanship shone brightly. From building custom dollhouses and intricate miniatures to creating wood-turned ornaments and pens for friends and family, Norm's projects brought joy to many. His talents extended to furniture making and wood carving, and he was recognized by the Woodworkers of Central New York Club in 2016, earning 1st Place in the "Toy" category and the prestigious "Best in Show" award for his castle dollhouse creation, a source of immense pride for him.
Beyond woodworking, Norm had a zest for life and learning. A certified Master Gardener, he also loved fly fishing, hunting for tool treasures at garage sales, and immersing himself in history and genealogy research. Norm was an active member of the American Legion. He also deeply valued his connections with the Silver Sneakers fitness group and the Pray It Off program at Holy Family Church, crediting them with keeping him active and healthy over the past decade. In the 1970s, Norm proudly marched in every Memorial Day Camillus parade as part of the 149th New York Volunteers (Civil War Historical Group).
Above all, Norm was a devoted family man. He married his high school sweetheart, the former Linda M. Noren, in June 1959. Their 65-year marriage was a testament to love and partnership, enriched by shared adventures and mutual respect.
Norman was predeceased by his parents, Albert M. and Florence M. Thomas.
Surviving are his wife, Linda; son, James E.; daughters, Sandra (Jerry) Haber and Mary (Elizabeth Mangle) Thomas; granddaughters, Cortney (Don Robertson) Eichelberger, Carly Eichelberger, and Cassie Thomas; great-grandson, Zander Thomas; and brother, Albert.
