Michael D. DeChick, 90, of Camillus, passed away Friday at the home of his daughter, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Auburn, he was a lifetime resident of the Syracuse area. He was an Army Air Corps veteran and member of the American Legion. Michael retired as deputy sheriff with the Onondaga County Sheriff's Dept. and previously worked for the Camillus Highway Dept. He was a communicant of Holy Family Church and a member of the Moose Club. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He also enjoyed traveling and spending time in Florida. Michael was predeceased by his wife, Thelma, in 1993; son, Michael J., in 2003; seven sisters; and seven brothers. Surviving are his daughter, Susan (Willie) Chapman of North Syracuse; sister, Margaret Ferguson of CA; brother, Daniel of Auburn; grandchildren, Becky Chapman Bodnar, Jeff and Brian Chapman, Heather DeChick-Soderholm (Kevin) and Amanda (Jesse) Perrine; great-grandchildren, Jeffrey Chapman Jr., Joseph and Elizabeth Bodnar, Taylor and Mia Soderholm, and Tianna DeChick-Perrine; many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may call Monday, September 28, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus. Services will be 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, September 29, at the funeral home and 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church, Fairmount where a funeral Mass will be celebrated. Michael will be laid to rest in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Marcellus. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association or Hospice of CNY.
