Mary Anna Melnick, 98, of Baldwinsville, passed away on Monday at Syracuse Home Health and Rehabilitation at McHarrie Place. Born in Syracuse to the late Trifon and Anna Romanuk Melnick, she moved to Meridian in 1933 and graduated from Cato-Meridian High School in 1945. She later relocated to New York City, where she attended secretarial school and worked as a legal secretary for several years.
Mary returned to Syracuse, where she was employed by New York State for 23 years. Her career included positions at SUNY Upstate Medical Center and an additional 18 years at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, retiring in 1990.
Mary was an avid reader who also enjoyed cross-country skiing and cherished getaways to Sanibel Island, FL, and Vermont. Most of all, she loved visiting Russia. Her vibrant spirit and passions will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.
Mary was predeceased by her sister, Barbara Gonsa; brothers, George and Stephen Melnick; and her betrothed, Sergei Gorbatsevich.
Surviving are her sister, Olga Demetriades of Wyomissing, PA; longtime dear friend, Michael Tabaczyk of Syracuse; and many nieces and nephews.
To honor Mary’s life, family and friends are invited to gather on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, from 4 to 6 p.m., with a Panakhyda service at 6 p.m., at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, January 16, 2025, at 10 a.m. in Ss. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church, 401 Hamilton St., Syracuse.
Mary will be laid to rest in Ss. Peter and Paul Orthodox Catholic Cemetery, Syracuse.
