Mary Kowalczyk, 91, of Fairmount, passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2014 in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her loving family. Born and raised in Herkimer, Mary moved to Syracuse in 1940 and retired after 30 years with General Electric. She was a communicant of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and formerly of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Andrew, in 1988; son, Richard, in 2005; and daughter, Kathleen Matott, in 2008. Surviving are her daughter, Mary Ellen Masterpole of Fairmount; sons, Dr. Nicholas (Andria) of Chandler, AZ and David of Fairmount; sisters, Helen (Bernard) Murphy of Scotia and Olga (John) Banas of Camillus; brother, Theodore Lytwynec of Catonsville, MD; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Calling hours will be private. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, June 9 at 9:30 a.m. in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Mary will be laid to rest in St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery, Syracuse.
