Mary Jo Smith, 85, of Camillus, passed away Tuesday, March 14, 2017 when she was called to her Lord peacefully in her Camillus home. Mary Jo was the daughter of Ernest and Mary Digney. Born on August 13, 1931, she was the oldest of the Digney’s three daughters and know as “Charlie.” Mary Jo graduated from St. Anthony’s High School and OCC. She married Laurence H. Smith on June 23, 1956. He remained by her side through the final days of her beautiful life, always holding her hand. With Larry, she raised three headstrong and successful daughters and one son. Their lights were further brightened by the blessing of seven grandsons, four granddaughters and most recently, a great-grandson.
Mary Jo was an extremely active member within her community and spent her years working with the Syracuse Symphony, P.E.A.C.E Inc. and Catholic Charities. She was a longtime and active member of Holy Family and the Altar Rosary Society. Her strength, character, loving and giving nature will be greatly missed.
Mary Jo was predeceased by her sister, Barbara Lipari.
Surviving are her husband, Laurence H. Smith; daughters, Marybeth (David) Smith-Giromini, Cherylann (Steve Matro) Smith and Sandra (Dave) Lofstrom; son, Laurence "Rusty" (Kelly) Smith; sister, Margaret Digney; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nephews.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Taryn, Patty and Helene for their loving care and compassion given to Mary Jo.
Relatives and friends may call Sunday, March 19 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, March 20 at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church. Mary Jo will be laid to rest in Greenlawn Cemetery, Warners.
