Mary Jo Ann Friedrich, 76, of Syracuse, passed away Wednesday at home. The daughter of Peter and Mary Layton, she was a native of Syracuse, graduating from St. Patrick's High School and Central City Business Institute. Mary Jo retired from New York State and traveled extensively with her late husband, Kurt, to historic sites, Civil War battlefields and enjoyed camping, hiking, fishing, and cross-country skiing. She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. In addition to her parents, Mary Jo was predeceased by her husband, Kurt, in 2001; and sister, Patricia Roche, in 2005. Mary Jo is survived by sons, Thomas (Karen Surace) Friedrich of Indian Rocks Beach, FL and Patrick (Mary Ann Husak) Friedrich of Syracuse; brother, Daniel (Joan Regan) Layton of Clayton, NC; sister, Katherine (Gene) Tarquinio of Liverpool; brother-in-law, George (Jan) Friedrich; and several nieces and nephews. She is also leaving behind her beloved dog, Benny. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, February 6 at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick's Church, 216 N. Lowell Ave., Syracuse. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Dewitt.
