Mary Elizabeth Condon, 84, of Fairmount and Vero Beach, FL, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, December 29 at Auburn Community Hospital. Born in Syracuse on March 6, 1937, she was a graduate of St. Anthony of Padua High School. Mary married her high school sweetheart, James Condon Sr., in 1957 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. She was employed as a medical secretary and a teacher’s aide at West Genesee Schools and was also a dedicated homemaker.
Mary was the founding person of the WG Assistant Teachers’ Union, a past president of the Fairmount Community Library Board, a 25-year religious education teacher at Holy Family Church and served as the Cub Scout leader for her three boys.
Mary enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was always the life of the party at the extended family gatherings as well as neighborhood late-night parties. Many cousins referred to her as the “crazy aunt.” She enjoyed her life and socializing with everyone she met. She loved arts and crafts, genealogy, cards, and spending time with her five grandchildren.
A 50-year survivor of cancer, her biggest lesson to her family and friends was her strong Irish stubbornness and her ability to overcome any challenge or obstacle put in front of her. She continued to show this over the past year. Mary has graciously donated her body to SUNY Upstate Medical University.
Mary was predeceased by her husband, James Condon Sr. in 2011; parents, John and Elizabeth Keegan; and sister, Margaret “Peggy” Webster.
Surviving are two brothers, Major John Keegan and Lt. Col. Fred Keegan – both proud USMC veterans; her sons, James Jr. (Sarah) of Skaneateles, Daniel (Joan) of Camillus, and Joseph (Jamie) of Fulton; and grandchildren, Megan, Lauren, Ryan (Heather), Dylan (Samantha), and Natalie.
Relatives and friends may call Wednesday, January 5 from 9 to 10 a.m. at Holy Family Church, 127 Chapel Dr., Syracuse 13219.
