Martin A. “Dutch” Slagel, 90, of Syracuse, passed away Monday at Elderwood at Liverpool. He was born in Utica, NY, on August 31, 1932, to the late John and Mary Slagel.
A graduate of Utica Free Academy High School, Martin received his bachelor’s degree from Utica College and master’s degree from Syracuse University. A U.S. Navy veteran, he was honorably discharged in 1956 after serving four years. Martin was employed by Utica Club Brewery before becoming the regional sales manager at Maytag Corporation for over 25 years, retiring in 1995. In his early years, he was an avid boat racer and won many titles. His interests then turned to gardening, hunting, and racquetball. Martin was a voracious reader his entire life. He was known for his dancing, especially the polka. Martin enjoyed his loving wife’s Italian cooking, loved arm wrestling with his grandchildren, and was a fitness and exercise enthusiast, lifting weights until his 89th year. He will be remembered for always demanding ice cream before dinner was even finished and for telling anyone that would listen about his motorcycle adventures across Germany. Above all, he loved spending time with his family who will miss him dearly.
Martin was predeceased by his beloved wife of 57 years, Rosemary; parents, John and Mary (Grimm) Slagel; and son-in-law, Randal Lundblad.
Surviving are his daughters, Sharon (Greg) DeCirce, Susan Lundblad, and Michelle (Tim) Walsh; grandchildren, Michael, Gregory, and Nicholas DeCirce, Trevor (Jessica) and Laura Lundblad, and Sara and Shane Walsh; sisters, Marion Skowron and Carol Burak; and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral Mass Monday, February 6 at 10:30 a.m. in The Church of St. Michael & St. Peter, 4782 West Seneca Turnpike, Syracuse. The family will greet visitors at the conclusion of Mass.
A private burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Warners.
