Margaret “Peggy” Eron has returned home to the Lord on December 1, 2017. Born Margaret Schneider in the hamlet of Redfield on Halloween 1926, Peggy grew up on the west side of Oswego with four brothers and three sisters. An honor student at Oswego Catholic, she often asserted, later in life, that she slept with her Latin book under her pillow. No one refuted the claim.
In the 1940s, she joined the sisterhood (small s) of compassionate and caring professional nurses educated at St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Syracuse and gave service as a public health nurse following graduation. Many of her dear lifelong friendships began at St. Joe’s.
In the early 1950s, her friends introduced her to the dashing Joe Eron. They fell in love and were married in April 1954. Peg and Joe were blessed with abundance whom they raised first in Solvay and then in Camillus. She is remembered fondly for her pearls of wisdom, such as "You won’t know, if you don’t ask," "To each his own, as the old lady kissed the cow" and "Do what you are doing!"
Multi-tasking before Webster’s knew the word, Peg volunteered her time and talents over the years at St. Cecilia’s, Bishop Ludden, Francis House, St. Camillus Nursing Home, Eucharistic adoration, the Cub Scouts, the Girl Scouts and as a poll watcher on Election Day, among other activities. She loved to socialize, play cards and read. Peg had a deep faith and trust in the Lord that sustained her throughout her life.
The last of her siblings to pass, she was predeceased by her husband, Joe; her only daughter, Mary Bernadette (Ravi); and an infant son, Michael Joseph.
Peg is survived by six sons, Dr. Joe Jr. (Barbara), Tom (Nancy), Michael (Donna), Paul, Chris (Kerry) and Capt. Stephen (Jill), who try their best to follow her lead.
Peg adored her grandchildren, Shanthi, Meera, Kate (Dennis), Krissy (Mike), Jacqui, Dan, David, C.J., Elena, Scott, Leigh, Julia (Brandon), Louis (Danielle), A.J., Molly, Kip and Alex; and great-grandchildren, Kieran, Lilyana, Cecilia, Brayden and Allison.
Many kind neighbors and friends helped Peg in the later stage of her life. The family extends special thanks to Dr. Thomas LaClair, his nurses and staff, Father Fred Mannara, Deacon John Bowden, and Carol Cooper, the angel who brought her such care and peace.
Relatives and friends may call Wednesday, December 6 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, December 7 at 9:30 a.m. in St. Cecilia’s Church, 1001 Woods Rd., Solvay. Peggy will be laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery, DeWitt.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Francis House, 108 Michaels Ave., Syracuse, NY 13208.
