Malcolm L. Bienvenu, 99, of Camillus, passed away peacefully on Wednesday at St. Camillus Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born in Saint Martinville, Louisiana, he grew up in Lafayette before moving to the Syracuse area in 1955. A proud graduate of the University of Southwestern Louisiana with a degree in Electrical Engineering, Malcolm served his country honorably as a U.S. Army veteran during World War II.
Malcolm spent over 30 years as an electrical engineer and manager at General Electric, retiring in 1987. He worked in the heavy military electronics division, contributing to critical projects such as NORAD in Greenland and military submarine programs. He was a member of several professional organizations, including Elfun and IEEE.
Beyond his career, Malcolm was well-known for his longstanding membership in the “Mickey Mouse Lunch Club” at The Retreat in Liverpool, a Friday tradition with fellow GE engineers that lasted over 30 years. His children once believed the club was named after him, only to later discover its origins traced back to a colleague’s “Mickey Mouse” lunchbox.
A man of deep faith, Malcolm was a devoted communicant of St. Joseph’s Church, where he was active in the Nocturnal Adoration Society and served on the parish council. Following his retirement, he found joy in gardening, golfing, and volunteering for ECHO Meals on Wheels.
More than anything, Malcolm cherished time spent with his family. He was a loving husband, father, and friend, always ready with a kind word and a warm smile.
Malcolm’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at The Hearth at Greenpoint and St. Camillus for the compassionate care he received over the past eight years.
Malcolm’s remarkable life, filled with service, faith, and love, will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Malcolm was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Elsie, in 2007; brothers, Louis Jr. and John; and sister, Stephanie DeRouen.
Surviving are his children, Denise (Fred) Buchanan, Michael (Debra), Monica (George Chapman) Sharlow, Sandra (Rob) Baker, Neil (Anna), and Richard (Alyssa); 13 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.
To celebrate Malcom’s life, relatives and friends are invited to gather on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, 5600 W. Genesee St., Camillus.
A funeral Mass will follow in the church.
Malcolm will be laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Resurrection Chapel Mausoleum, DeWitt.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels ECHO, Inc., 4600 W. Genesee St., Syracuse, NY 13219, or to Alzheimer’s Association CNY Chapter, 5015 Campuswood Dr., Ste. 102, E. Syracuse, NY 13057.
