Lorraine (Stepien) Szul, 64, of Camillus, passed away Tuesday, November 15, 2016 with her loving family by her side due to complications related to Alzheimer's disease. A lifetime resident of the Syracuse area, she graduated from Sacred Heart High School and CCBI. Lorraine worked at Niagara Mohawk for seven years, West Genesee School District for seven years and Syracuse University for 13 years. A longtime communicant of St. Joseph's Church, she participated in the funeral guild, sandwich making for the homeless and Adoration Chapel until she was no longer able to. Lorraine also volunteered as a Syracuse University marching band assistant for many years, retiring in 2012.
Lorraine was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in October of 2012. She lived at home under the care of her loving husband for four years, which is a true testament of love, "until death do us part." A special thanks goes out to all the wonderful caregivers that helped Lorraine in the last year of her life.
Lorraine was predeceased by her parents, John and Helen Stepien; and mother-in-law, Stephanie Szul.
Surviving are her husband of 42 years, Roman; son, Kevin (Melissa) of Warners; daughter, Kimberly (Andrew) Smith of Rochester; sisters, Pauline (John) Hillins of Scottsdale, AZ, Carolyn (Gerald) Sabloski of Camillus and Barbara (Glenn) Shepard of Camillus; brother, John (Susan) Stepien of North Syracuse; and grandchildren, Carissa Faith Smith, Carly Grace Smith and Violet Eleanor Szul.
Lorraine is also survived by a number of aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, as well as a large number of friends.
Relatives and friends may call Monday, November 21 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus.
A prayer service will begin at 10 a.m. at the funeral home on Tuesday, November 22 with a funeral Mass to follow at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, 600 W. Genesee St., Camillus. Lorraine will be laid to rest in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Camillus.
