Leon J. Blasiak, 83, of Camillus, passed away Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at St. Camillus Health & Rehabilitation Center. Born in Buffalo on Sunday, May 30, 1926, he was the son of John Joseph Blasiak and Anna Lewczyk Blasiak. He lived in Camillus since 1970. Leon graduated with a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University where he was a member of Eta Kappa Nu. He served in the Navy during World War II, stationed in Cuba. A licensed professional engineer, Leon worked for 35 years at Niagara Mohawk Power Corp., where he was a designer of transmission lines, power distribution substations and electrical protection systems for nuclear and fossil fuel generating facilities. He served on several standards committees of the IEEE. He was an active communicant of St. Joseph's Church and former member of the Holy Name Society. Leon was a Life Scout and Boy Scout leader. He volunteered with Meals-on-Wheels, Community General Hospital and was a tax preparer through AARP. The family extends its heartfelt thanks to all of the B Unit staff at St. Camillus for the compassionate care they provided. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, the former Adele Gister; daughters and sons-in-law, Grace and John D'Arcangelis of Patchogue, Dr. Maria and William Pence of Bedford and Anne and Paul Peterson of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; sons and daughters-in-law, James and Miriam Blasiak of North Potomac, Maryland, Richard and Elaine Blasiak of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, John and Joanne Blasiak of Martville, Joseph and Sue Blasiak of Fairport, Thomas and Tina Blasiak of Dresden, Germany and George and Kim Blasiak of Baldwinsville; sisters and brother-in-law, Blanche Rodgers and Alice and Syl Dobrowolski, all of Buffalo; 17 grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Aline (Fred) Nielan and Maryann Walters; and many loving nieces and nephews. Leon was predeceased by his sisters, Frances Wujcik and Mildred Szulist. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 22, 2009 at St. Joseph’s Church where a funeral Mass will be celebrated. Relatives and friends may call Friday, August 21, 2009 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus. Leon will be laid to rest in Greenlawn Cemetery, Warners. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Food Pantry, 5600 W. Genesee St., Camillus, NY 13031.
