LaVerne L. Powell, 90, of Raleigh, NC, passed away Thursday at home. Born and raised in Staten Island, New York, she moved to the Syracuse area in 1957. A graduate of Port Richmond High School, LaVerne worked as a keypunch operator for several years while her fiance, and later husband, Noble was serving in the Air Force. She returned to work to support her children in college. A communicant of St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, she volunteered for more than twenty years at ECHO Meals on Wheels and at the Fairmont Community library where she was also a trustee. She enjoyed playing bridge and participated in the Empire State Senior Games. Above all, LaVerne loved spending time with her family.
LaVerne was predeceased by her husband, Noble in 1987; parents, William and Alberda Izett, and brother, Reynold Izett.
Surviving are her sons, Kenneth (Margaret) of Raleigh, NC and Donald of Dallas, TX; daughter, Ellen (John) Fotino of North Andover, MA; grandsons, Stephen and Thomas Powell; granddaughters, Samantha and Kaitlyn Fotino; great-grandsons, Charles and Henry; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, October 7 at 10:00 am at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, 5108 W. Genesee St., Camillus. LaVerne will be laid to rest in Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Syracuse.
