Kathleen Ruane Tompkins, 64, of Syracuse, broke free of the bonds of ALS while surrounded by her loving family at home. Her soul now soars to the music of the eternal.
A lifetime resident of Syracuse, she earned her master’s degree from Le Moyne College. Kathy taught in the Westhill School District for 24 years. Over her 40-year career, she inspired generations of young singers and music lovers.
Kathy is remembered for many wonderful qualities. She had a rare talent for teaching her students to believe in themselves and find the courage to perform confidently. She instilled in her students a deep appreciation of the precious influence a diverse and open culture has on music and the arts. She was especially sensitive to the challenges faced by young people with special needs and created a welcoming classroom environment where all were given an opportunity to shine.
Kathy cherished time spent with her children, grandchildren, and many dear friends.
Kathy was predeceased by her parents, John and Elizabeth Ruane, and beloved Aunts Mary and Angeline Iadanza.
Surviving are her adoring husband, Andrew; children, Jeff Tripoli, Bryan (Allison) Tripoli, Kara Tripoli, Nathan (Tracy) Tompkins, Maria Tompkins and Emily Tompkins; grandchildren, Clara and Camila Tompkins and Grace and Chase Tripoli; sisters-in-law, Carolyn Ware and Jennifer Tompkins; and several cousins, including David (Nancy) Iadanza, with whom she was close.
There will be no services at this time. A celebration of Kathy’s life will take place later this year.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to your local SPCA or the ALS Association Upstate New York Chapter.
