Karen A. Long, 59, of Liverpool, passed away Friday, May 13, 2011 at home. Born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania on Sunday, August 12, 1951, she moved to Utica at the age of five where she resided until moving to Syracuse in 1980. Karen lived in Liverpool since 1984. She was a graduate of Utica Catholic Academy and Utica College. For more than 20 years, Karen was employed by the Syracuse City School District as an occupational therapist, retiring in 2007. She was also an itinerant occupational therapist for the Onondaga County Health Department Early Intervention Program. A communicant of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, she was also a Eucharistic minister, wedding rehearsal coordinator and volunteer at the church bookstore. An avid bicyclist and swimmer with her husband, she also enjoyed traveling and visiting with her children. Karen was predeceased by her parents, John and Leona Gouse. Surviving are her husband of 36 years, Edward J. Long; daughter, Stephanie Ann Long of Utica; sons and daughter-in-law, Todd M. and Katherine Long of Washington, D.C. and Petty Officer Michael E. Long of Miami, Florida. Relatives and friends may call Monday, May 16 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 259 E. Onondaga Street, Syracuse. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 17 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Karen will be laid to rest at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery in Liverpool. Arrangements are by the Buranich Funeral Home, Camillus. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Amaus Medical Services at Cathedral, 259 E. Onondaga St., Syracuse, NY 13202.
