Joyce Elaine Eschenfelder, 72, of Syracuse, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at Central Park Rehabilitation & Nursing Center after a long battle with Alzheimer's dementia. Born in Syracuse, Joyce was a graduate of Solvay High School and received her bachelor's degree from Miami University and her master's degree in education from George Mason University. Joyce followed her husband's career as a marine officer, having lived in Jacksonville, NC, New Orleans, LA, Bainbridge, MD, Newport, RI, Nairobi, Kenya, Camp Pendleton, CA, Fairfax, VA and Syracuse. Joyce had a real passion for teaching, she was a reading teacher for the North Syracuse Central School District and also taught at the International School in Nairobi, Kenya. She was an alumni advisor of SU’s Chapter Kappa Kappa Gamma and a province field representative for Kappa Kappa Gamma. She was a member of Fairmount Community Church United Church of Christ.
Joyce was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Alice Long.
Surviving are her loving husband of 50 years, George Eschenfelder III; daughter, Kristin R. Eschenfelder, PhD of Madison, WI; son, George "Chip" Eschenfelder of Denver, CO; brothers, Robert Long of Detroit, MI, Douglas Long of Lexington, KY and Wallace Long of Detroit, MI; and stepmother, Mildred S. Long of Baldwinsville. Joyce loved them all dearly.
Services will take place in the spring.
