Joseph L. Gartland, 84, formerly of Camillus, passed away Monday, May 16, 2016 in Bristol, RI. Born in Syracuse, he lived in North Kingstown, RI for 23 years until returning to Syracuse. He was a 1950 graduate of North Syracuse High School and a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War. Joe lived in Camillus for 11 years before returning to Rhode Island in 2007. Joe was formerly employed by GE in Syracuse, the International Paper Co. and the Syracuse City School District, each for approximately 10 years. He was a former communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Camillus. Joseph was predeceased by his wife, the former Connie Slater, in 2014; and sisters, Rita McFee of Florida, Agnes McKay of NJ, and Helen O'Brien of SC; and brother, Gerard of CA. Surviving are his daughters, Barbara Jones of York, ME, Nancy Wray of Seattle, WA and Stephanie Chabot of Coventry, RI; sons, James of Fruitland Park, FL and Joseph and Casey, both of North Kingstown, RI; sisters, Gerry Robb of North Syracuse and Celestine Dennis of Syracuse; 18 grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. There will be no calling hours. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, August 4 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, 5600 W. Genesee St., Camillus. Joseph will be laid to rest in St. Agnes Cemetery, Syracuse. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Catholic Charities, 1654 W. Onondaga St., Syracuse, NY 13204.
