Joseph C. Cavallaro of Syracuse, passed away Sunday, June 13, 2010 at the Birchwood Nursing Home in Liverpool at the age of 88. Joseph was born in Syracuse on Tuesday, May 23, 1922, and was the son of Charles and Sara Stagnitta Cavallaro. Upon graduation from North High School he enlisted in the US Army serving as a corporal in England and France during World War Two. He married the love of his life, America Grasso of Rome, New York in 1946 and raised a family with her for over 51 years. Joe and America loved going to the horse races and enjoyed going to Vernon Downs together for many years, where they made many good friends. Joe worked as a supervisor at the Joseph Pietrafesa Clothing Company (Learbury's) for many years before retiring. He enjoyed gardening and helping his family. Joe was a great handyman and was very skilled at fixing things around the house. Joe was predeceased by his wife, the former America Grasso; and brothers, Samuel and Anthony. He is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Rosemary and Joseph Canestraro and Joanne and James Holtz; son, Joseph (James) Cavallaro; three grandchildren, Tina and Joseph Canestraro, and Gwen Holtz; and two great grandchildren, Nicholas O’Brien and Shaina Canestraro. His family expresses its sincere gratitude to the staff at the Birchwood Nursing Home for their care and support. His life will be honored and celebrated at calling hours on Friday, June 18 from 4 to 7 p. m. at Buranich Funeral Home, Inc., 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus. A funeral service will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 19 at the funeral home with Rev. Paul F. Angelicchio officiating. Entombment will be in Woodlawn Mausoleum, Syracuse.
