John T. Poppe Sr.

April 17, 1926 — January 7, 2016

John T. Poppe Sr., 89, of Syracuse, passed away Thursday, January 7, 2016 at University Hospital. A lifetime resident of Syracuse, he was a Marine Corps veteran of WW II, where he served in the Asiatic Pacific area.  He also served in the Korean War. John retired from Carrier Corp. after more than 30 years. He enjoyed fishing and playing cards, especially pitch and poker. John was predeceased by three brothers and three sisters.    Surviving are his wife of 68 years, the former Barbara Prouty; sons, Stephen Sr. (Deborah) of Auburn, John Jr. (Virginia) and Gary (Laurie), both of Syracuse, Kevin (Maria) of Phoenix, NY and Keith of PA; sister, Catherine (Bill) Susko of Liverpool; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four step grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may call Sunday, January 10 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, January 11 at 10 a.m. in St. Charles~St. Ann's Parish, 501 South Orchard Rd. John will be laid to rest in Assumption Cemetery.
