John G. Sessler went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday after 103 years on earth helping others. “Jack”, as he was known to his friends, was born and raised in Syracuse. A graduate of Eastwood High School, he served in the Marine Corps during WWII in the Central Pacific area and Okinawa. Jack was honorably discharged and went on to earn a Master's Degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Syracuse University. He worked for Syracuse University and SRC (Syracuse Research Corp.) before starting his own technical consulting business, specializing in accident reconstructions for the legal system. He retired at 90 years of age.
After serving in the military and traveling the world, Jack came back to Syracuse and married his wife, Phyllis (Long). Together they raised five children, Laurie, Bob, Mike, John, and Marita (Mike) Len. Jack was a devoted family man, later enjoying his grandchildren, Holly, Amanda, and McKenna. Although he never met his great-granddaughter, Adysen, he enjoyed seeing pictures of her and spoke lovingly of her often.
Jack loved music and was an accomplished musician. In his later years, he often entertained fellow residents during happy hour at the assisted living facility where he lived. Jack was a self-taught musician, learning to play piano, organ, saxophone, clarinet, and most recently, guitar and ukelele, at 100 years of age. He spent his life learning and was "brushing up" on calculus in his 90s and quantum theory, as it fascinated him.
Jack loved to play golf as often as possible and served as president of the Pompey Hills Golf Club. Although humble about his ability, in his 90s, he was still able to beat players half his age. He liked to watch professional golf tournaments, in addition to being an avid SU sports fan.
Jack was a devout Catholic and served the Lord at St. Andrews the Apostle and All Saints Churches for many years. He had many friends and tried to help anyone that he could. Jack has gone on to be with those who have predeceased him, including his loving wife, Phyllis; daughter, Laurie; and son, Mike.
