John “Jack” Leahy, 91, of Syracuse, passed away Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at Menorah Park. He was born in Syracuse on October 27, 1927 to the late John and Bernadette Leahy. A graduate of St. John the Baptist, Jack served in the US Coast Guard during WWII. He was a sergeant for the Syracuse Police for 23 years. During retirement, Jack worked as a private investigator and an investigator for the New York State Medicaid Fraud Division. He enjoyed traveling to Saratoga during the racing season, Maine and Ireland. He also enjoyed reading history books and watching sports, especially SU basketball and football.
Jack was predeceased by his longtime companion, Joan Geppinger; and sister, Mary Schafer.
Surviving are his niece, Mary Lynn (Terrence) Murphy of Syracuse; nephews, John (Arianna) Schafer and Gregory Schafer, both of Syracuse; great-niece, Nicole (Jason) Schafer Farino of Liverpool; and several great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
Services will be private. Jack will be laid to rest in Assumption Cemetery, Syracuse.
