John "Jack" L. Gibbons, 59, of Camillus passed away on Friday, October 2, 2020. He was born on August 28, 1961 in Syracuse to John and Betty Gibbons. Jack was a lifetime resident of Camillus, graduated from West Genesee High School, attended Le Moyne College and graduated from SUNY ESF.
He worked in management in several Agway Garden Centers. Jack had a long successful career coaching diving at West Genesee and LeMoyne College, sending divers to State and National competitions. He received numerous Coach of the Year awards from the Northeast-10 Athletic Conference. He followed in his father’s footsteps working for the Red Cross as a water safety instructor. He grew into teaching first aid and CPR courses.
Jack was the family encyclopedia, educating us about astronomy, botany, and history. He was an avid fan of Syracuse sports and horrible puns. He was a devoted uncle to Ben, Nate, Bridget, Tim, JJ and Shay. Jack had a childlike spirit which made him a favorite among many children. He was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church in Camillus and a member of the choir. In recent years Jack and Jeanne traveled to Rehoboth Beach, Alaska, Ireland and Poland.
Jack is predeceased by his parents and nephew, JJ Gibbons, and his beloved dog, Boru.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his partner, Jeanne Gabris; siblings, Mary (David) Raymond, Diane (Michael) Deveney, James (Marie) Gibbons, Janet (Christopher) Smyth, several nephews and a niece. Additionally, Jack is survived by Jeanne’s children, Erich and Christopher Gabris, and Jennifer Kaleta; devoted Cavy, Lady and a large extended family.
Relatives and friends may call Friday, October 9 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, October 10 at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, 5600 W. Genesee St., Camillus. Jack will be laid to rest at Greenlawn Cemetery, Warners.
