John F. Pirong, 87, of Fairmount, passed away Sunday, October 25, 2015 at Van Duyn Rehabilitation & Nursing. A lifetime resident of the Syracuse area, he graduated from Solvay High School and was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was employed with GE for 14 years and retired as a sales engineer from Fred Clemett Co. in 1993 after 35 years. An active communicant of Holy Family Church, John served as an usher for over 55 years, sang in the funeral choir and volunteered with many organizations within the church. He was a former member of American Legion post #1540, Tom Dooley Choraliers, former president of the Ancient Order of Hiberians and a charter member of the Camillus Optimist. He loved spending time with his family. Surviving are his wife of 64 years, the former Mary Janet “MJ” Garn; son, John of Camillus; daughter, Cynthia (Dave) Stevens of Bloomfield; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may call Wednesday, October 28 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, October 29 at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church. John will be laid to rest in Resurrection Chapel Mausoleum, St. Mary's Cemetery, DeWitt.
