John Patrick Bates, 55, of Syracuse, passed away Friday at home. A lifetime resident of the Syracuse area, John's passion for education led him to graduate from Liverpool High School before pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Studies at SUNY Buffalo where he prepared the first-ever campus ecology report done for the university. He then dedicated his career to serving the community as a wastewater technician for Onondaga County Water Environment Protection for over 10 years. His contributions were invaluable in ensuring the preservation and sustainability of the local environment.
Outside of work, John was an avid supporter of Syracuse University and could often be found cheering on the team during sporting events. He cherished time spent with his family, embracing the joy and love shared during gatherings. The serene tranquility found at the family camp in Penn Yan held a special place in his heart, providing moments of solace and harmony in nature. John had a deep appreciation for the outdoors, venturing into the wilderness whenever he had the chance. His companionship with his tight-knit group of high school and work buddies brought about countless adventures.
Above all else, John embraced his role as a dedicated father to his son. He treasured every moment with his beloved son and instilled in him the values of love, perseverance, and devotion.
John was predeceased by his parents, Alton and Julia; and mother-in-law, Barbara Wachob.
Surviving are his son, Owen; brothers, Kevin (Denise) and David (Debbie); sister, Christine (David) Kent; former wife, Laura Shultz; father-in-law, Ray Wachob; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
