John Banas Sr., 83, of Camillus, passed away Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at home. Born in Jamesville, he was a lifetime resident of the Camillus area. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War and the radio operator on the Boeing B-29 Superfortress. John worked for Syracuse University for many years and was previously employed with General Crush Stone. He was an avid boating enthusiast and loved hunting, fishing and repairing motorized vehicles. He was known as the "handyman." John was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Maria; sisters, Madge, Alice, Mary and Ine "Anna;" and brothers, Pete and Joe. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, the former Olga Lytwynec; daughter, Maria Banas Bailey of Camillus; sons, John Jr. (Vicky) of Baldwinsville, Ronald (Eve) of Jamesville, Kenneth (Christine) of FL, and Robert of Belgium; sister, Helen Reals of Albany; brother, Andrew (Angie) of Jamesville; grandchildren, Deirdre M. Bailey of Camillus, Jessica Banas of Belgium, Melissa K. Bailey of Camillus, and Lee Banas of Belgium; and many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be private. A funeral Mass will be celebrated in Holy Family Church on Monday, March 14 at 10 a.m. John will be laid to rest in Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
