Joanne “Sue” (Wild) Abbey, 83, of Westvale, died Sunday, July 22, 2018 at home surrounded by her six loving daughters. Born November 15, 1934 to Walter and Georgiana Wild, Sue graduated from Valley High School and married the love of her life, Jim Abbey. Over the next 11 years, the couple welcomed six daughters into their lives and raised them in the Valley neighborhood under the stewardship of St. James Church and school. Sue retired in 1995 after managing the State Senate office in the Syracuse District.
Sue loved her family immensely and rarely missed a grandchild’s game, concert, recital or stage production. She hosted many gatherings in her home with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and made each holiday joyful. She helped all to realize the joy and beauty of God’s gifts. Simply said, Sue was God’s gift to her family. An avid reader of all genres, she also loved attending the Syracuse Symphony and traveling with her lifelong friend, Diane Gotham. Sue also loved gardening, just as her father did. We have all enjoyed her love of these art forms.
Sue was predeceased by her husband, James A. Abbey; father, Walter E. Wild; mother, Georgiana Wild; stepmother, Mary Wild; and brother, Thomas Wild.
Surviving are her daughters, Meg (Steve) Horning of Camillus, Beth (Bob) Skelton of Fairport, Karen (Jim) Wickersham of Syracuse, Maureen (Kevin) Morgan of Manlius, Kate (Ray) Jannetti and Kristen (John) Galimi, both of Syracuse; grandchildren, Mike (Tara) Horning, Abbey (Doug) Cronin, Ryan Horning, Peter (Aimee) Cullen, Jack Cullen, Claire, Patrick, and Emmett Wickersham, Kathleen and Mary Clare Morgan, Adam (Rhonda) Jannetti, Aaron Jannetti, Carolyn (Chris) Devins, and Lauren, Kathryn, and John Galimi; great-grandchildren, Grace, Annie, Matthew, Gus, Will, Harper, Wyatt, and Ethan; brother, Anthony Wild; and several nieces, nephews and dear friends.
The family wishes to thank Lynn Marinelli for her kind help in caring for their mother, as well as Cathy and Kateri of Hospice and Deacon Bob Fangio of Holy Family Church.
Relatives and friends may call Friday, July 27 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, July 28 at 11 a.m. in Holy Family Church. Sue will be laid to rest in Onondaga Valley Cemetery.
