Joan F. Cooney, 84, of Fairmount, passed away Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at Brookdale Bellevue. A lifetime resident of Syracuse, she was a 1954 graduate of Syracuse University School of Music. After her marriage to Lt. Charles T. Cooney Jr. in October 1955, her husband and companion of more than 61 years, Joan embraced her role as the wife of an Air Force Officer. Together as newlyweds, Joan and Charles ventured west to the state of Washington and thereafter the Territory of Alaska before returning east to raise what grew to become their family of four children. Joan was a communicant of Holy Family Church where she was active in the choir for 50 years. She was also a 20-year volunteer with the WCNY Read Out Program. She enjoyed classical music, sewing, knitting, reading, gardening, playing couples Bridge and cooking, especially her amazing apple pie.
Joan was predeceased by her husband, Charles "Chuck" Thomas Cooney Jr., in February; and son-in-law, Captain Donald Roberts USAF, in 1989.
Surviving are her children, Charles (Jamie Jo) Cooney III of Camillus, Robert (Laurie LeChanse) Cooney of Baldwinsville, Elizabeth Roberts of Victor and Commander James (Vanessa) Cooney, U.S. Navy, retired of Carlisle, PA; grandchildren, Erin (Roberts) McGregor, Kirk Roberts, Morgan, Schyler, and Matthew and Dylan Cooney; great-grandchildren, Rose, Violet, Ethan and Logan; and cousins.
Relatives and friends may call Monday, June 26 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, June 27 at 12:30 p.m. in Holy Family Church. Joan will be laid to rest in St. Mary's Cemetery, DeWitt.
