Jane Ellen Lewis passed away peacefully on Friday. The youngest of nine children, she was born on January 10, 1934 in Syracuse and raised in “Skunk City.” She worked as a telephone operator and supervisor for the New York Telephone Co. for many years and retired in 1999.from Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital as the switchboard supervisor.
Jane was predeceased by her parents, Ernest Lewis and Mary St. George Lewis, brothers, George, Albert, Hector and Steven Lewis; and sisters, Loretta Bennett, Frances Stewart, Georgette Zory and Rita Kapral.
Jane is survived by her nephew, Rev. Richard Kapral, who will officiate at the funeral Mass, her other 18 nieces and nephews, along with many great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
For Jane, the most important thing in life was her family. She was the glue and support in crisis and the first to celebrate all of the happy times. Her presence will be deeply missed by all those left behind.
Relatives and friends may call Wednesday, March 9 from 10 to 11 a.m. at Holy Family Church, 127 Chapel Dr., Syracuse. A funeral Mass will follow at 11 a.m.
Jane will be laid to rest at St. Mary’s Cemetery, DeWitt.
