Jack Smithson, 97, of Syracuse, passed away Thursday at Iroquois Skilled Nursing Community. Born in Syracuse, he lived in Camillus most of his life. Jack proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1943 to 1946. He embarked on a remarkable journey aboard the Battleship USS Iowa, traveling to Africa, South America, Europe, and the South Pacific. Jack’s dedication and courage earned him the honor of being awarded eight campaign stars. In recognition of his service to his country, he held membership in the Disabled American Veterans. Following his honorable discharge, Jack began his career with The Jewel Tea Co., where he dedicated 38 years of his life, retiring in 1985. He was an active member of the Syracuse Vineyard Church, where he found strength, guidance, and lifelong friendships. In addition to his dedication to his family and faith, Jack selflessly served his community as a volunteer with the Camillus Fire Department for an astounding 42 years.
Jack was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Elaine, on May 21, 2023; stepdaughter, Leslee Blevins; and grandson, Jamie Rotella.
Surviving are his daughters, Nancy VanKleef of Omaha, NE, and Irene Smithson of Phoenix, AZ; stepson, Reese (Kristen) Perry of Syracuse; stepdaughters, Jolaine (Fred) Murrell of Denver, CO, Perri (Jay) Rotella of Elbridge; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service honoring Jack’s life will be held on Saturday, December 16 at 10 a.m. at the Vineyard Church, 312 Lakeside Rd., Syracuse.
