Camillus

Gloria V. MacCallum, 98, of Camilluspassed away peacefully on Tuesday at Crouse Hospital. A lifetime resident of the Solvay and Camillus areas, she graduated from Solvay High School and earned her master’s degree from Syracuse University. Gloria dedicated her life to education, working as a librarian at the West Genesee School District for over 15 years. She shared her knowledge, together with her husband, by volunteering to teach refugees.

Outside of her professional life, Gloria was a devoted advocate for animals and took great care of her adopted rescues. Her generous spirit extended to various causes, and she was an active participant in community service projects, notably volunteering for Meals on Wheels. A member of Immanuel United Methodist Church, she found solace and community in her faith, particularly cherishing her time there as part of the “Church of the Bells”.

Gloria's interests were as diverse as her contributions to society. An avid Syracuse University and New York Yankees fan, she eagerly followed their games and celebrated their victories. In addition to her love for sports, she was a keen follower of political news, spending hours staying informed on current events.

Known for her compassionate nature, Gloria was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. Her kindness touched the lives of many, leaving a legacy of empathy and generosity.

Gloria was predeceased by her son, John R. Jr.; daughter, Janet Pitcher; and parents, Bonny and Alice Virginia.

Surviving are her husband of 75 years, John; son, Douglas of Marcellus; grandsons, Andrew and Ralph Pitcher and John III; granddaughters, Mary (Corey) Fike, Sarah (Dave) Wilson, and Jeannine Struble; nine great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
