George T. Riley, 90, of Fairmount, passed away Friday, December 14, 2018 at The Centers at St. Camillus. Born in Brooklyn, he moved to the Syracuse area in the early 60s. George was a 1946 graduate of Xavier High School in NYC, received his bachelor's degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1950 and master’s degree from Brooklyn Tech. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. George retired in 1993 after 37 years with General Electric.
A man of faith, George was a longtime communicant of Holy Family Church. He was involved in numerous ministries including Faith Formation, Life Teen, mentor for the Pre-Cana program and led Bible studies. He was a promoter of the Sacred Heart Enthronement Apostolate and enjoyed daily readings of the Divine Office. He was also a former member of the Syracuse Choral and GE Elfun Society. When his children were young, George coached WOYSA soccer. He was known for his passion for birds and nature. George loved spending time with family, especially his grandchildren.
George was predeceased by his parents, George and Marie Riley; and sister, Mary Elizabeth Riley.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, the former Geraldine Coleman; son, Thomas (Cristie) Riley of Charlotte, NC; daughters, Ann (Bill) Schmitzer of St. Paul, MN, Catherine (Chris) Jensen of Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada and Eileen (Michael) O'Hara of Syracuse; and grandchildren, Morgan Riley, Allie, Thomas, Robert, Abigail, James, William and Aileen Schmitzer, Riley, Ronan, Molly, Maggie, Mairin and Cailin Jensen and Maeve and Ashlin O'Hara.
The family would like to thank the staff at St. Camillus for their loving care and compassion given to George.
Relatives and friends may call Tuesday, December 18 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, December 19 at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church. George will be laid to rest in Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
